Students can incorporate all the sample activities into one page, as well.  This way, they can choose how to show what they know about the story.  This page is an example of that.

Chapter 1

Charlotte's Web kicks off with Fern Arable asking her mother a question: "Where's Papa going with that ax?"   According to Fern's Mama, Mrs. Arable, Papa is heading out to the hoghouse to "do away" with the smallest pig.  Fern realizes that her Papa is going to kill the runt of the litter, and she doesn't think that's fair at all!  So Fern rushes outside and pleads with her dad to spare the pig. She even tries to take the ax from his hands.  Fern eventually gets her way. Her dad decides to save the pig, and let her care for it just like a baby.  But Papa sounds like he also thinks this might teach Fern a lesson about just how tough it can be to care for animals.

Fern is obsessed with her little piggy.  She feeds him milk from a baby bottle, and dreams about him while on the bus.  She even comes up with a name for her little piggy:  Wilbur.  Fern continues to be distracted by thoughts of her new piggy all day.  She's in love!

At first, Fern's brother, Avery, is all for killing the little pig.  Then he sees Fern gets to keep it as a pet, and wants one for himself.

Fern is obsessed with her little piggy.  She feeds him milk from a baby bottle, and dreams about him while on the bus.  She even comes up with a name for her little piggy:  Wilbur.  Fern continues to be distracted by thoughts of her new piggy all day.  She's in love!

These journal entries are about Charlotte's Web.

"Wilbur never forgot Charlotte. Although he loved her children and grandchildren dearly, none of the new spiders ever quite took her place in his heart."

This quote reminds me that some friendships last forever.  And forever is a long time.

"Life is always a rich and steady time when you are waiting for something to happen or to hatch."

This quote makes me think about all the times waiting for something to happen (the anticipation) was just as exciting, and maybe even more exciting, than the event itself.

"From one to two, Wilbur planned to sleep. From two to three, he planned to scratch itchy places by rubbing against the fence. From three to four, he planned to stand perfectly still and think of what it was like to be alive, and to wait for Fern."

This quote reminds me of how much Wilbur's life revolves around Fern being in it.

"Wilbur didn't want food, he wanted love."

This quote makes me think about how lucky Wilbur was that Fern rescued him.  He found someone who was not only willing to take care of his physical needs, but his emotional needs, as well.

"If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”

This quote made me realize that Fern thinks animals are just as important as humans, and she is a very empathetic character.

Passage

“But it’s unfair,” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”

I chose this passage because Fern made the pig’s problem hers, and with her passionate feelings about the piglet, she saved his life.

Connection

This chapter reminds me of the time I found a baby turtle at my grandpa’s cottage and I wanted to keep it. My dad said it would die because it was so tiny, but I took it home and took care of it. Scooter was one of my very first pets.
